Patti's Fight Starting in
January of 2005 in "Remission" November 2005 only to come back again in January 2006 & continuing on to this day! The pink ribbon is the symbol for breast cancer awareness invented in 1991 by Evelyn H. Lauder, founder & president of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Alexandra Penney, then-editor of Self Magazine. Lauder says, "The ribbon stands for awareness and for the sisterhood that will help women survive and conquer this disease" Patti Gates was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) March 3, 2005. Almost immediately, her Oncologist started an aggressive chemotherapy program prior to any potential surgery. Patti had a bilateral mastectomy on May 16, 2005. Patti had months of chemotherapy and radiation in 2005. Her spirit is strong and her support group extremely supportive and vast. Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) Most breast cancers do not have initial symptoms exhibiting as an infection. As you will read, IBC can disguise itself as an infection, which initially has physicians not considering cancer. Only later, cancer becomes a consideration. Sometimes then, the cancer has had too much time to spread. In Patti's case, our hope is that it has been caught early. With the tremendous strides achieved in cancer research, the five year survival rate of what are considered the most common forms of breast cancer, have risen to 85% to 90%. What a fantastic accomplishment versus the past. Unfortunately, IBC still has a five year survival rate of anywhere between 25% and 40%. We would be grateful if you would consider adding Patti to your prayers. To learn more about this rare and extremely aggressive form of breast cancer as well as read more about Patti's fight, please, click on the pink ribbons below. If just one person achieves an early detection of IBC by gaining knowledge via Patti's story, then Patti & I will be extremely happy! |
